Get Rain Ready: Monsoon Skincare Tips for Newborns and Toddlers

It is that time of the year again! The rain clouds gather, there’s some thunder, and soon the scent of petrichor fills the air. It is time for the blessings of nature in the form of raindrops! And along with it come a few more reasons to take extra care of your little one. Did you know? Your little one’s skin is 40-60 times thinner than ours and hence needs utmost care and nourishment, since it is more susceptible to heat rashes, skin infections, pus boils, and nappy rashes during this season.

But it isn’t a Herculean task to take care of your little one’s skin. We are here with a few tips for you, which will go a long way in keeping your little one happy:

Bath-time care

Bath time, as we know, is an excellent engaging and bonding time with your little one, but during monsoons, it does not have to be a daily occurrence. Bathing your baby twice or thrice a week is ideal.

Remember to bathe them in lukewarm water, and you can choose either a baby soap or a baby body wash that is gentle on the baby’s skin. Use products that are free from parabens, dyes, and phthalates and are clinically proven to be safe and suitable for your baby’s skin. Soaps enriched with milk protein, and vitamin E are your ideal choices. If you are using a baby body wash, look for something with natural milk extracts or rice bran protein. Choosing products that will gently wash away germs and keep the skin soft and smooth is the way to go.

Our recommendations? Try the Nirmalya Snan Natural Baby Soap by BabyForest, or Baby Gentle Wash by Sebamed.

Moisturizing

Popular research states that 2 out of 3 children in India have dry skin. The humidity that sets in during monsoons doesn’t help the cause either, as it can make your little one more prone to rashes or skin infections! It is important to keep your baby’s skin moisturized using products that not only nourish but also protect the baby’s skin. Do ensure these products are paraben-free, alcohol-free, and sulfate-free. Dermatologically tested products like the Daily Lotion with Organic Calendula by Cetaphil which is enriched with Calendula Flower, Sunflower Oil, Almond Oil, and Glycerine, or the Ayurveda-inspired Baby Butter Combo by Maate which consists of an exotic blend of ingredients like Avocado, Jojoba and Shea Butter that provides long-lasting moisturization are great picks for this season. They serve the purpose of keeping your little one healthy and moisturized while introducing them to their first-ever monsoons.

Diaper Care

Along with moisturizing, diaper care is the next essential part of your baby’s monsoon skincare routine. A wet, tight diaper is anyway uncomfortable, but during the monsoons? Unbearable!

The humidity can lead to increased sweating, which in turn could lead to diaper dermatitis and infections in the perianal area, leading to a very unhappy baby. The steps to combat this are very simple. All it takes is a timely change of diapers, some care of the diaper area of a baby, and some very necessary diaper-free time! Bambo Nature has some wonderful diapers with a wetness indicator, that tells you exactly when the diaper needs changing. Along with that, keep the diaper area clean with some soft Mulmul Baby Wipes from Baby Forest. These are alcohol-free. To keep the baby’s diaper area clean and rash-free (in case a rash has already occurred) when they are enjoying some diaper-free time, you can opt for the Diaper Cream by Cetaphil. It soothes diaper rash overnight while helping repair the affected area from the first use itself. It essentially forms a protective barrier on your little one’s skin, keeping them safe and protected!

Clothing and other general care

Monsoons bring with them other avenues where your baby can feel uncomfortable, along with the usual ones that we mentioned above. The kind of clothing they are in a day in and day out can also affect their skin and lead to skin problems and general irritation. Opt for full-length cotton clothes like organic cotton jhablas or jumpsuits, or a onesie that will keep the flow of air ongoing and ensure comfort to your tiny tot! Jhablas by Love The World Today is extremely comfortable, made in India with hand-weaved cotton that will keep your baby looking trendy and comfortable while at it. For a nice western look, a onesie for your little one, or a jumpsuit for your toddler by Dulaar are quite the options to explore!

It is also important to keep your child away from anything that leads to a larger risk of diseases. You guessed it right! Mosquitoes. A good mosquito repellent like the Maashak Kawach by Baby Forest has the perfect blend of 9 Ayurvedic herbs and oils and is infused with Lemon Grass Oil will keep your baby safe from the Aedes and Anopheles mosquitoes. Even adding a mosquito net for your baby’s stroller can add a layer of protection for them.

Monsoons are a wonderful time of the year and a great way to introduce your baby to the wonder that is the world and the surrounding nature! You shouldn’t have to hold back on that joy and experience with your baby. Inculcating these practices early will ensure you don’t feel the guilt of indulging in some fun and frolic with your little one, while also ensuring your baby follows these healthy habits well into adulthood.
